What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder described by chronic musculoskeletal pain, stiffness, and abnormal sensation along with disturbed sleep, headache, and tiredness. There are multiple symmetric tender points throughout the body. The common tender points are suboccipital muscle, midpoint of upper border of trapezius muscle, scapular border, lateral epicondyle, buttocks, and medial side of knee. Fibromyalgia affects mostly women compared to men.

What causes Fibromyalgia?

There are several suggestions on causing fibromyalgia.

  • Abnormal function of central nervous system
  • Deficiency of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that regulates pain and non-rapid eye movement sleep)
  • Reduced levels of growth hormone which is important for muscle repair and strength
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction

According to 8 constitutional medicine(Bodytype), fibromyalgia is caused by a set of nervous system dysfunction and unbalanced vitality exchange between the strongest organ and the weakest organ. Within chronic fibromyalgia patients, there is a chance to be developed to nervous system distortion.

Autonomic nervous system delivers appropriate vitality throughout the body. However, if the strongest organ becomes too powerful, vitality cannot be delivered efficiently. As a result, an undetectable inflammation is produced. This is a “functional inflammation”, so it usually cannot be detected by the laboratory test. The inflammation causes the malfunction of autonomic nervous system. After that, body becomes hypersensitivity to stressor, even though the stressor is very light.

What are the Symptoms?

Main symptom is an increased susceptibility to pain. The pain is very severe even if one of tender point is touched lightly. The pain level can be changed by exertion, stress, and climate. The musculoskeletal pain, stiffness, and fatigue are common symptoms. Stiffness is generally present on arising in the morning and some degree of pain is always present. It is commonly associated with disturbed sleep, irritable bowel syndrome, headache, and temporomandibular joint pain. Others experience dizziness, anxiety, or depression.

Diagnosis

Fibromyalgia is diagnosed by a history of widespread musculoskeletal pain present for at least 3 months and the demonstration of significant tenderness or pain in at least 11 of the 18 tender point sites on digital palpitation.

Does Fibromyalgia Cause Permanent Damage?

It does not cause physical damage to internal organs or muscles even though it conveys unpleasant feelings. This is a chronic disease. The symptoms have up and down severity but fibromyalgia does not threat one’s life.

Treatment

Suggested treatment plan is two acupuncture sessions per week along with herbal treatment at least for 3 months. Fibromyalgia acupuncture treatment will generate the balance between parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system as well as the strongest organ and the weakest organ. If the symptoms indicate the distortion of nervous system, anti-degeneration treatment is needed for extra months. Fibromyalgia acupuncture treatment does not only focus on pain but also work on associated symptoms such as disturbed sleep, anxiety, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Herbal treatment will nourish the weak organs and stop the disturbed sleep. In addition, it will sedate the stress level and soothe the stress related symptoms.

*Fibromyalgia acupuncture treatment plan will may vary depending on each individual’s condition.
